Por qué la talla importa más que cualquier otra cosa
Un sombrero grande baila con el viento, se recarga en las orejas y te hace ver desproporcionado. Uno apretado deja marca en la frente y provoca dolor de cabeza a la media hora. Ningún fieltro fino ni ninguna palma bien tejida compensan una talla equivocada. La buena noticia: tu medida es un número fijo, y sacarlo en casa es facilísimo.
Cómo medir tu cabeza en casa
- Consigue una cinta métrica flexible, de las de costura. Si no tienes, usa un cordón o un cable y después mídelo contra una regla.
- Rodea tu cabeza por donde descansa el sombrero: aproximadamente un dedo arriba de las cejas y justo arriba de las orejas.
- La cinta debe quedar ajustada pero cómoda. Ni floja ni apretando.
- Mide dos o tres veces y quédate con el número que más se repita, en centímetros.

Las conversiones a pulgadas son aproximadas. Cuando tengas duda, manda el contorno en centímetros: es la medida más precisa y la que usamos para confirmar tu talla.
¿Por qué mi sombrero de México dice 57 y el americano dice 7 1/8?
Es la misma cabeza con dos sistemas. En México la mayoría de las marcas marcan la talla directamente en centímetros (56, 57, 58). Las marcas americanas usan fracciones (7, 7 1/8, 7 1/4), que salen de dividir el contorno en pulgadas entre pi. Con la tabla de arriba puedes brincar de un sistema al otro sin miedo.
¿Qué hago si quedo entre dos tallas?
Elige la más grande. Un sombrero ligeramente holgado se ajusta perfecto con una tira de espuma dentro del tafilete (la banda interior), un truco que usan hasta los sombrereros profesionales. Uno apretado, en cambio, no tiene remedio cómodo. Esto aplica igual para fieltro y palma: ninguno de los dos estira lo suficiente como para apostarle a la talla chica.
La prueba final cuando llegue tu tejana
- Debe asentarse firme, aproximadamente un dedo arriba de las cejas.
- Debe caber un dedo entre el tafilete y tu frente, ajustado pero sin presión.
- Sacude la cabeza con ganas: el sombrero no debe moverse ni volarse.
- Úsalo 15 minutos en casa. Si no sientes presión en la frente ni en las sienes, es tu talla.

No fine felt or tightly woven straw can make up for the wrong size. The good news: your measurement is a fixed number, and getting it at home is easy.
How to measure your head at home
- Grab a flexible sewing tape measure. If you do not have one, use a string or a cord and measure it against a ruler afterward.
- Wrap it around your head where a hat actually sits: about one finger above your eyebrows and just above your ears.
- The tape should sit snug but comfortable. Not loose, not digging in.
- Measure two or three times and keep the number that repeats, in centimeters.

Why does my hat from Mexico say 57 and my American hat say 7 1/8?
Same head, two systems. In Mexico most brands stamp the size directly in centimeters (56, 57, 58). American brands use fractions (7, 7 1/8, 7 1/4), which come from dividing the circumference in inches by pi. With the chart above you can move between both systems with confidence.
What if I fall between two sizes?
Choose the larger one. A slightly roomy hat adjusts perfectly with a foam sizing strip inside the sweatband, a trick professional hatters use every day. A tight hat, on the other hand, has no comfortable fix. This applies to both felt and straw: neither stretches enough to gamble on the smaller size.
The final test when your hat arrives
- It should sit firm, about one finger above your eyebrows.
- One finger should fit between the sweatband and your forehead: snug, no pressure.
- Shake your head hard: the hat should not shift or fly off.
- Wear it for 15 minutes at home. No pressure on your forehead or temples means it is your size.
